33 Reasons Why Libraries and Librarians are Still Extremely Important.

If you know me, I am usually not this self-serving--except when I talk about libraries and the state of public libraries.

Check out this posting. It is a good comparison between the Internet and libraries. Recently I did an online research class for a group of local home schoolers. I asked them to compare Google and the library. They used a lot of the standard answers (listed on the 33 Reasons post) and I was able to talk about authority and reliability. Most of the kids believed that if they saw it online, it was true.

I know the 33 Reasons posting is lighting up the biblio-blog-o-sphere (fancy talk for library blogs), but I wanted to share it with the patrons, politicians and citizens that support the Archdale Public Library.

Bird's Eye View...
Thanks to Microsoft's Live Service, you can type in an address and get a satellite image view of the location. You can actually zoom in pretty close. It isn't perfect (it had the library's address smack dab in the middle of US 311 about a mile north--so I moved it--the pointer, not the library), but it is a great way to look at landmarks and get directions.

As you can see from the image, it is not a current image. Looking at the state of the front yard, it appears that there is construction work being done. That would place this image around 2002.

Google Earth offers a similar service, but it does require a download. Windows Live is a web application. Google Maps has satellite imagery, but you can't zoom in as close as Windows Live.

Have fun!
