We celebrated Halloween with a pirate themed party!

Over 45 children joined us for the celebration.

And yes, we had a limbo competition.

MANDATORY WATER RESTRICTIONS
________________________________

Yesterday, Governor Mike Easley called for mandatory water restrictions. Citizens are to stop using water for any purpose that is not essential to public health and safety so that communities can save their dwindling water supplies and avoid more stringent restrictions. The drought across much of the state is the worst in recorded history. With a winter forecast of drier than normal conditions.

The mandate is as follows:

• Stop watering lawns and shrubbery at homes and businesses.
• Do not wash down houses, driveways or sidewalks.
• Do not wash cars.
• Restaurants should ONLY serve water upon request.

The Governor also announced that, effective immediately, there is a statewide ban on all public burning.

Our tech just installed our two new Internet workstations yesterday!

This means we have ten computers for public use with Internet and Microsoft Office 2003.

Book Review

Soon I will Be Invincible by Austin Grossman.

I loved this book. If you've ever spent time reading comic books, pretending you were Superman (or Lex Luthor) or watching the Justice League and The Incredibles--you will love this book.

You follow the adventures of Dr. Impossible and Fatale: a maniacal evil genius and a female cyborg superhero. Both of the characters tell their stories (and their origins) through alternating chapters. Grossman takes you behind the mask and you get to experience what it might be like to be a misunderstood megalomaniac and a rookie superhero.

It is a riveting tale with a secret island base, a world renowned super team and, ultimately, love lost. You also get to see that being a super or a villain may not be all it is cracked up to be.

Soon I Will Be Invincible is a great weekend/beach read. As the summer starts to wind down and you start to think about school, final vacations and work schedules--it is a quick and fun read to occupy your time.

What's Flickr, you ask?

The Asheboro and Archdale locations of the Randolph County Library have been using Flickr to host and display photographs of the library, events and generally cool stuff. You can see our Flickr badges on the side columns.

If you are new to Flickr, I would recommend checking out this great website: Newbie's Guide to Flickr (Thanks to The Librarian In Black blog). There is a lot of great information (and screenshots) about getting started with Flickr.

Another resource is Flickr Hacks. This is a more advanced book about Flickr that we just purchased at the Archdale Library.

Kurt Vonnegut, 1922-2007

There have been a lot of posts in the blog-o-sphere over the past few days about the passing of novelist Kurt Vonnegut. He is best known for his 1969 work, Slaughterhouse-Five. You can check out more of his works here.
